When you are traveling, part of the itinerary is visiting famous shopping areas and districts. If the prices are affordable and the goods are good, I am sure you can’t help but hoard a lot of stuff. Now what you are going to do with the excessive things you have bought? How are you going to keep your luggage light in weight?

Before going crazy on your shopping spree, you also have to consider how much weight you are going to bring home with you. In order to maintain lightweight luggage, here are a few tips you would want to consider:

1. Before your scheduled departure, try to make a list of the things you are going to purchase. If you are purposefully buying something, you can prevent yourself from purchasing unnecessary items. Stick to your list. In addition to that, conduct a research and find out where you can find the items you want to buy. This will make short work of your shopping expedition.

2. If you see an item you really want, categorize it to your wants and needs. If it is something you need and something you can use all the time, go ahead and buy it. However, if it is something you want and it does not really take up a large space in your bag, you can consider buying it as well.

3. When buying gifts for loved-ones, consider getting them the same items. Buy souvenir items in bulk and have it packed for you. Avoid buying souvenir items that are made from fragile or breakable materials. You will have hard time packing them.

4. When buying, find out if the goods you want are available in your country. If they are, why not just buy them when you get home? If they are not available, try purchasing a few pieces of the items. Find out if the company has an online store that ships to your country so you can purchase more if you need more of them.

In countries like Japan, many tourists hoard Japan-made pretzels and chocolates. While they are relatively light in weight, they can take up a lot of space in your luggage. Just buy a few boxes so you can taste it and if you want more, you can purchase online.

5. You might want to leave bath products behind. When packing before traveling, try to transfer big bath products into smaller containers so you can pack easily. Once you have already consumed the products, you can leave the containers behind so you have more space inside your bag.

Now that you know all these, you can maintain lightweight luggage easily. Follow these simple tips when traveling.

I’m just finishing a teaching contract in Korea, and I’m planning on doing a bit of traveling in Thailand before I fly back home to the states. Unfortunately I’ll have a big suitcase with me that has all my stuff from living here.

I’d like to just pay for storage for my suitcase and travel around with a backpack instead. I’ve been to train stations that provide that type of service. Can I do it at this airport too?

Several years ago, lost property offices existed at most main line railway stations, as well as all major airports. But growing suspicion about unattended baggage – which was borne out by the occasional terrorist outrage – led to such facilities being massively scaled back, as keeping an eye on all the items which people handed in simply became too big and too risky a job.

So for many years, travellers had no alternative but to keep their belongings with them whenever and wherever they travelled – and had to suffer the monotony of the constant announcements imploring them to do so at every airport and railway station. Today, however, the situation has improved, and this change of attitudes is down to major changes in surveillance and bag-checking technology.

It’s now easier and quicker than ever for a suitcase, holdall or overnight bag to be X-rayed or scanned by some other means, ensuring that the attendant on duty in the left luggage office is exposed to far fewer risks. People working in such environments are specially trained to be on their guard at all times, and to be vigilant in checking both any baggage which is entrusted to their care, and the people who leave it. They have the right to refuse to accept any item of baggage about which they have any suspicions, while of course being mindful that the service they are offering is valuable to many passengers.

So there is a delicate balance to be struck. People should be quite happy that they can hand items which they have found in to the conscientious care of someone expressly entrusted to the task of looking after it. Yet these people and their vital work should not be put in jeopardy by anyone who might seek to use such facilities to cause disruption. Thankfully, because of the use of cutting-edge technology, losing an item of property while in transit does not necessarily mean that there will not be a happy ending to the episode.

If you’re travelling from either of London’s major airports, and want a secure place to store your luggage, use luggage storage Heathrow or the bag wrap facilities to help give yourself an easier journey.

I’m coming in from Penn Station and just there for the day. Are there any hotels that have luggage storage even if I am NOT staying at a hotel? Or any other places near Grand Central Station.

Best answer:

Answer by nix1602
For Security and liability reasons, no hotel will store your bags if you are not registered or do not have a reservation at the hotel. There are no more lockers at Grand Central Station since 2001
I believe there is still a Amtrak check luggage point at Penn Station, but you must have a valid ticket, been a while since I have been there
